Reverand Walter S. South (1824-1897) was a Methodist clergyman, farmer, and circuit rider, born in Kentucky. He moved to Texas in 1847, settling in the town of Bryan in Brazos County, Texas in 1863. South’s duties as a circuit rider required him to travel throughout Texas in an effort to minister to settlers and organize congregations. From a small beginning in May 1932, the Methodist Crusaders Choir, then with 75 choristers, was hurriedly formed and made its first public appearance at the General Conference Meetings of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It is primarily a hymn-singing choir, and the devoted members feel that the main purpose in their coming together is to spread the gospel message of the Church by means of song.
